Texto y fotos: Sarah Kather

The hike to the Fin del Mundo starts a few meters away from the Hostel. It's a good idea to go with a guide or at least to ask how to go before you start, to reach your destination easily. But in every case there are some signs on the way to guide you. The way up is accompanied by impressive vegetation. It might not be the easiest walk if you're untrained, but there are some possibilities to sit down and at the end of your way there are refreshing, natural swimming-pools waiting for you. The paths were made by the owners just some years ago to make it accessible for tourists. Within the week you will meet a small amount of people, so that you can enjoy the nature even more. One route takes you to the “Ojo de dios”, the eye of god. That is a 15 meters high waterfall that comes straight out of a hole in the rock. In the lake and on the way to it, following a river, there are lots of possibilities to take a bath.

The other route to the Fin del Mundo might be a bit more spectacular, but higher frequented. However, you can reach both places at one day without any rush. The way up to the Fin del Mundo seems like taken out from another time, if you would not meet some tourists or locals. You will pass waterfalls and natural swimming pools, a natural stone bridge and diverse vegetation, just following the Dantayaco river. At one of the pools there is the opportunity to have lunch, that's why they call it “almorzadero”. It is also a popular bathing-place. You can jump down the seven meters high waterfall, with a little courage, but there won't be any risk because at this point the lake is about five meters deep. After that adventure follows the main waterfall, the mysterious “Fin del mundo”. Who comes here will directly understand how this place got his name. I remembered right away what my friend told me about “As from the movie Jurassic Park!”, like from another, former time. The river Dantayaco sags abruptly and forms a 70 meters high waterfall. On the other side of the valley, you can see the lush rainforest and farer away the town Mocoa. The waterfalls breeze forms rainbows on sunny days. It seems impossible to capture those intense impressions, like it was impossible to take a picture where you can get an idea of how beautiful and magical that place is. For that, you'll have to come and discover it by yourself.

As a special experience, there is also the opportunity to stay in a house within the Fin del Mundo-site. Without electricity, but even closer to the nature.
